How I got off all antacid medications and so can you!

The Thickening of my Gums, Cheeks and Tongue

I never thought that I would have issues with my gums, roof of my mouth, cheeks and tongue getting thick and hard but I did! It came on bit by bit. I suffered over the years with issues in my mouth like my jaw would crack over and over again. That would be very painful! And eventually my jaw stayed misaligned and my bite was off so my bite did not line up properly anymore. This caused my teeth to wear off angled to fit this new misaligned jaw bite. My teeth shifted as my thickened gums took over. This too would misalign my bite as my teeth no longer lined up correctly.

I also had issues with biting my cheeks over and over again especially in one area because the inside of my cheeks were so thick and swollen. My cheeks had no where to go but to bulge into my mouth and in the way of my teeth (and they were bulging on my face too!). I would bite so hard on my cheeks that I would take chunks of flesh out. I would bleed and my cheek would swell up because of the injury which would make me bite my cheek even more. This happened during the day but the majority of the biting happened when I was sleeping.

Also my tongue was so thick that it was impossible to not be biting on it day and night. It felt horrible to have this tongue that is too big to fit in my mouth. My tongue over flowed over my teeth as there was no where else for it go. So it’s no wonder that I bit it so many times!

I also noticed that the roof of my mouth had thickened and the roof of my mouth wasn’t as high up as used to be. I had a big hard lump in the middle and slightly to the right of the roof of my mouth.

It felt like everything in my mouth was closing in on itself! All the tissue was thick and hard. My teeth shifted. My mouth was a mess just like every inch of my body!

This went on for years while I was on heartburn medications and not realizing the medications were the cause of all this. When I finally got off the medications, I thought all of this was going to go instantly away by the tissue becoming softer and the swelling melting away. Unfortunately, that was the not case, things got a lot worse for me as old issues became worse and new issues arose. Just when I couldn’t stand another moment of being this way and just wanted to get better, I had to deal with this for a lot longer than I thought.

The thickening of my gums added greater sensitivity to my nerve endings but it became so much worse after I got off the medications. And this including that I went through a couple of years that my teeth were ultra sensitive which I have never dealt with before. This made teeth cleaning very painful as I could barely handle anything touching my teeth. This including if I was trying to get something unstuck in my teeth!

I’m sharing this picture of someone’s mouth not because of their periodontal gum disease but it’s shows where I really became thick and hard and the thickness continued right up to my cheeks in the upper jaw area and thickness and hardness continued in the lower jaw area that wrapped around my jawline. This thickness was in the neighborhood of a good ½”! So what should have been flexible tissue had become thick and hard tissue that was like concrete.

I found once my body started healing and the hardness was slowly going away, I started noticing changes in my mouth. The unfortunate part of the healing for me is that the hardening of the tissue is replaced with tissue becoming softer but even more swollen. So biting my cheeks and tongue became worse before it slowly got better.

My jaw finally cracked back in place which was great but now my teeth were worn completely wrong and I couldn’t bite down without hitting one side of my teeth that were too long and other side of my teeth that wasn’t even touching each other like they should be. That took a few years for my teeth to wear down evenly on both sides like they should be. My teeth slowly shifted back into their original place which was wonderful.

I found I went through a period of time that I really was clenching my teeth a lot in the night. Then I would start grinding my teeth. I would wake up with my teeth really hurting and feeling like I would break my teeth! My dentist confirmed that I could indeed do that so I got a mouth guard. This really helped to protect my teeth while I went through that stage. Eventually I was no longer clenching my teeth. Slowly the thickening of my gums and tongue softened and shrunk to their normal size. The health of my mouth came back. It was a very long journey and I sure appreciate that my mouth is healthy again!

Soda Pop to the Heartburn Rescue!

Soda Pop to stop heartburnAre you having problems with heartburn/acid reflux? Perhaps drinking a bit of soda pop will help! You can say it is a natural heartburn cure.

I know, I know, you shouldn’t be drinking pop! I know there is no nutritional value in pop. And I know the sugar and caffeine content is not good for you either. Plus there is talk to carbonated drinks deplete the calcium from your bones. But if I have choose between drinking pop or taking PPI’s, I would drink pop hands down as it’s a natural heartburn cure. Pop helped me in 2 ways!

Soda Pop gives you Energy

The first way it helped me was it gave me energy when my energy level was so low from being on Nexium. My energy level for many years from Nexium was so low I could barely function. Nexium depletes your body from calcium, vitamin B12 and magnesium no matter who you are! So the longer you are on Nexium, or any PPI for that matter, the more your body will be depleted from these necessary minerals and vitamins from your body. And you may also become malnourished too. And one of the side effects for that is very low energy.

I would drink pop either in the morning or early afternoon. The reason for this is so that I would be able to sleep at night. If I drank pop too late in the day then I would be too hyper to get a good night sleep in. (Although it’s been years since I’ve had a good night sleep because of the headaches, body pains and getting up to pee umpteen times throughout the night. So I didn’t need to add another reason why I couldn’t sleep!)

Carbonation in Soda Pop helps with Gas in your Stomach

The second way that pop helped me was the carbonation in it. It helped me to get all the air out of my stomach which equalled no or much less heartburn! I found I could feel air in my stomach that was down deep and then my stomach acid and food was on top of the air. I found that I would get terrible heartburn and acid reflux but by having pop, it helped me tremendously with this issue. This was a huge plus for me.

McDonald's pop drink to stop heartburnRight or wrong, I drank soda pop specifically coke (and MacDonald’s coke). It helped me with my heartburn and for that I’m grateful. Also in my opinion, it is a natural heartburn cure. I know that there are many negative reasons including that you shouldn’t have sugar or carbonated drinks as it’s a heartburn trigger. But I found soda pop more helpful than negative and who would have thought that pop could also have benefits!

Are you sure you are Fat?

Your antacid medication could be the blame for your weight gain!Just because you’ve put on weight, doesn’t mean it’s fat! Say what? Are you sure you are fat? You could be gaining weight from your antacid medications and making it impossible to lose it too!

I started gaining weight when I started taking antacid medications but I didn’t connect the two for years. Regularly, I exercised and was mindful of what I ate so I was baffled as to why I was gaining weight. I’m not saying I was a saint and ate perfect but I just couldn’t lose this ‘fat’ for the life of me!

Unexplained Weight Gain

Shockingly, I watched my body get bigger, change shape and get as hard as a rock! It was years before I realized that the antacid medications was the entire cause. Weight gain was one of my many side effects! Every part of my body hurt too! I experienced unbearable pain if something or someone slightly touched me. The worst time for the pain was when I first started taking the antacid medications and after I got off all antacid medications. Don’t get me wrong, I was still in incredible pain in between those times.

Body Changes as I took different Antacid Medications

Let’s have a quick look at the antacid medications I took. As well as my weight gain from Antacid Medications. For more in depth information please see My Story page.

Tums

I started taking tums  for my heartburn/acid reflux. (Tums is a calcium carbonate medication). Within a year, I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror anymore. (I had a few tums a day). I was horrified at how I changed but I had no idea that tums were the cause. Trust me, I would have stopped taking tums in a heartbeat if I knew they were the cause!

Zantac

I started taking Zantac when tums no longer were working for my heartburn/acid reflux. (Zantac is a H2-Blocker). Zantac made me feel very ill and the weight gain  continued although it helped with my heartburn/acid reflux.

Nexium

When Zantac’s side effects became unbearable, my doctor put me on Nexium. (it’s a proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)). However, my body kept getting bigger, more painful (every square inch of me) and harder. I continued having more and more side effects. It became so severe that it almost killed me. I stopped taking Nexium.

Gaviscon

I experienced extreme rebound acid when I got off Nexium. Gaviscon came to my rescue after I tried going holistic but couldn’t.  I thought I would instantly start losing the extra weight I gained from the antacid medications but I didn’t. Losing the extra weight only happened when I was no longer on any antacid medications. It was a light bulb moment for me that my body didn’t like any of the antacid medications.

Antacid Medications changed every Cell in my Body!

Antacid medications changed every single cell on my body. Every cell became inflamed or swollen and given enough time, it then harden up my entire body! It’s the best that I can describe what it did to me.

Nexium’s manufacturer used to call this side effect ‘skin thickening‘ especially in the upper abdomen. They no longer mention this side effect when you look up ‘severe side effects of Nexium‘. In fact, over the years I’ve seen on the Internet, many side effects come and go on their list. Hence, why it was next to impossible to find out what was wrong with me. It would be difficult to find out what was wrong with me today with the side effects that they removed.

From my perspective, the possible Nexium side effects were much more descriptive and true for me back in 2013. But in all reality, reading what other patients experienced from being on Nexium at askapatient.com was the most valuable to me.

Your Weight Gain may NOT be your Fault!

Isn’t 20/20 vision wonderful?! It’s so obvious looking back at everything. Realizing that my weight gain started when I first took antacid medications and continued until I stopped taking them. My body screamed that it didn’t like any antacid medications. At the time, I didn’t have much experience with prescribed drugs to be honest. (or street drugs or even alcohol for that matter). I totally trusted the medical industry and that they wouldn’t give me anything that could harm me. I certainly had no idea that medication could even do that to a person! Nor did I know that I became addicted to Nexium!

If you are taking any antacid medication and experiencing weight gain that is not explainable. And if every inch of you is hard and hurts perhaps this might be happening to you! For some people, they lose weight from being on antacid medications. Because our bodies are chemically different from one another, it can cause different side effects from the same medication!

I was a Drug Addict and didn’t even know it!

Did you know that being on antacid medications for a few short weeks, your body will become dependent to it?! In other words, you will become addicted to antacid medication!

After I stopped taking Nexium, I went through major withdrawal. This is when I realized that I was a drug addict and didn’t even know it! Wow, was I shocked to realize that I was addicted to antacid medication!

Rebound Acid that wouldn’t Stop

My doctor told me that Nexium was going to heal my heartburn/acid reflux issues within 4 – 6 weeks. Every time I tried to go off of Nexium, my heartburn/acid reflux became unbearable. I went back on Nexium. I was told by my doctor to keep taking Nexium for a bit longer as my stomach wasn’t healed yet. And that is what I did. Again when I tried to go off Nexium, I had terrible rebound acid. My doctor said that I can go off Nexium any time that I want but I also could stay on Nexium for life as it is safe.

I needed Nexium

My heartburn/acid reflux was very strong for quite a few hours after I took a Nexium pill before it took affect. (this is what almost killed me on February 5, 2008). I asked my doctor, ‘If I take a Nexium pill every 24 hours, how would I know when my body is healed and I no longer needed Nexium?’ She agreed and said waiting until my heartburn returns and then taking Nexium is a good idea. I thought one day, my heartburn would be gone and would not need Nexium. The truth is, my body would never heal! What was truly happening was I was experiencing the very strong rebound acid because my body was addicted to antacid medication. My body needed Nexium to function!

I had no desire to stay on Nexium for the rest of my life or any medication for that matter. Personally, I don’t believe in taking medication unless it’s necessary. I do realize there are always exceptions. In my opinion, antacid medication should not fall in this exception category. I wouldn’t take a Nexium pill until I started getting heartburn/acid reflux. I would last anywhere from 24 – 48 hours before I needed to take another Nexium pill.

Studies on Nexium

In fact, there have been studies done with volunteers who didn’t have heartburn/acid reflux issues. The volunteers took a Nexium pill once every 24 hours for 4 weeks. Once the study was complete, they were already addicted to Nexium! They experienced rebound acid once they stopped taking Nexium! Nexium eventually gives you what you are taking it for! Think about that for a moment…how scary! Doctors often prescribe larger doses of Nexium to offset rebound acid. And around and around the patient goes with side effects from antacid medications!

I never would have started down this path if I had known about this before I went on any antacid medication. I trusted doctors to temporarily prescribe us medication to heal our medical issues. Not to make us a life long prescribed drug user!

Finding www.askapatient.com Website saved my life!

One of the greatest days for me was when by Googling, I found out the reason for all my many illnesses was from Nexium!

Looking for Answers

I’ve been searching for years for why I was so sick. I have seen many family doctors, internal medicine specialists, dermatologists, dentists, chiropractors, naturopath doctors and many other holistic professionals. I talked to the pharmacists, asking them questions…hoping someone would have insight to why I was so sick! Not one of these medical professionals ever suggested that Nexium was doing this to me! I searched on the Internet for years but I searched on my many illnesses not the drug, Nexium, I was taking.  I never thought about searching on ‘Nexium or Nexium side effects’.

Didn’t Have Much Information on Nexium

The information that I was given with my prescription of Nexium never had much information on the dangerous side effects of PPI’s. (proton pump inhibitor). Especially back in 2001 when I first starting taking Nexium. In fact, I never even thought you could get all these side effects from heartburn medication. I guess you could say I was naïve. Plus I believed the doctors when they said that Nexium was safe and it would not cause the issues I was having.

I was on a continuous hamster wheel trying to find out why I was so sick. Unfortunately, when I was searching (Google) on the Internet for possible reasons for all my strange illnesses, I never type in something like ‘Nexium side effects’.  Wished I did as I would have been able to get off of Nexium many years before I did. I can’t beat myself up as I did the best that I could.

I Finally Found Answers to my Health Issues

The website is: www.askapatient.com. This is where you type in any drug name and it will tells you patients experience with the drug. What a brilliant idea! I’ve read many people who had very similar side effects as me, some not even close and even some patients who absolutely love Nexium.

How to Navigate in askapatient.com

Here is how to navigate in www.askapatient.com website:

Once you are in there, type nexium in the search bar and click on ‘search’ button.

Then you will go to this page. You will have a few different areas that you can click on about Nexium. I’ve snooped on all them but the one I usually go to is the first one ‘VIEW 998 RATINGS’.

You will then be directed to another page. This is where you can read other peoples rating and opinion on Nexium.

I cried when I found this website! I was finally freed with knowledge and hope! Everything that I was experiencing with my health was confirmed because of this website. I am eternally grateful to this website!

Reading peoples experiences and suffering from the side effects from Nexium was disheartening. Although it was educational and a huge step in my recovery! I knew the next step was to get off of Nexium and to create a plan to get me there!
